Approximately one-third of the military rotates its duty station each year. Additionally service members reported that they were away from home an average of two months per year, even when not deploying. Many of these service members are young and living away from home for the first time. Job stress is high and they are often without a strong local support system. Our service members are looking for a place that reminds them of home, where they can relax and enjoy creature comforts. They need a place where they are welcomed with open arms and that the community can connect and show appreciation.
The Facts:
1. 43.2% of active duty service members are under the age of 25.
2. 39.9% of active duty service members are single with no children.
3. 60% of service members do not live on a military installation.
4. Over 130,000 service members visited USO-Metro airport centers.
5. 77% of service members indicate that social media is important for them to maintain contact when friends and family at home.
6. Virginia has the third highest concentration of military in the continental United States.
Why is USO-Metro poised to make a difference here?
Our five installation centers and four airport centers provide snacks and meals to thousands of service members each year. In addition, center programs help to foster a sense of community and fellowship. We are a known quantity which service members and their families have grown to trust to provide that touch of home that helps them to feel connected and appreciated.
