Evelyn Honea has been nominated for volunteer of the quarter for Summer 2013. Evelyn serves more than 20 hours a month at the Indian Head and Dahlgren USO Centers.
"Evelyn is a worker...she sees a need, she attacks it," said Elizabeth Laub, South Potomac USO Center Coordinator. "She is great at making visitors feel welcome and special. Open and friendly, she's a gracious hostess and an ideal troubleshooter."
A unique combination, Evelyn is both a good listener and great conversationalist. She is known for her dynamic personality, good humor and compassion. Those who know her describe a hard-to-explain "gravitation" she has that makes people want to be around her and join her in serving the community.
Evelyn has gone above and beyond on several occasions when USO-Metro has had a last-minute need for volunteers. Her dual-role of military spouse and USO volunteer allows her to easily understand and connect with the needs of military guests. She is particularly attentive to the needs of spouses and children. You may have seen her recently on WUSA9's Hero's Central speaking from the perspective of a military spouse about the benefits of USO support services at a Mobile USO event.
Not one to shy away from physical labor, she once spent two hours in the center garage cleaning out a fridge that had burst from frost. After chipping away the ice with a spatula and letting it drain overnight, she was back the next morning to put it back in place and get it up and running.
Evelyn and her husband of 20 years, South Potomac Command Master Chief Jim Honea, attend and assist with many activities at both Dahlgren and Indian Head. Evelyn is receptive to the opinions of others and often proposes new program ideas that she designs around requests from service members and/or their families.
