The Gary Sinise Foundation and USO of Metropolitan Washington will host the "Invincible Spirit Festival" Sept. 11 from 5-9 p.m. on Fort Belvoir's Pullen Field. The free event features a musical performance by Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan. Band and a cookout prepared by Food Network celebrity chef Robert Irvine.

The entire Fort Belvoir community is invited to attend, including Department of Defense civilians and their Families.

"It's kind of a thank-you to everybody who is working here," said Pam Horton, USO Warrior and Family Center manager. "It's been a rough summer with budget cuts. It's just a way to give back."

The event also includes a rock climbing wall and activities for children, including arts and crafts, a moon bounce, face painting and balloon animals.

"It's definitely a big Family event as well as for active duty," said K.J. Stevens, USO programs coordinator. "It's really going to be a great way to end the summer with a bang."

The "Invincible Spirit Festival" takes place on Patriot Day, which is an annual observance on Sept. 11 that commemorates those who died or were injured in the terrorist attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, according to a USO press release.

The field will open at 4:30 p.m., dinner will begin at 5 p.m., and the Lt. Dan Band will take the stage at 7 p.m.

"The band is phenomenal," said Stevens, who heard the Lt. Dan Band perform at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in May.

The 12-member band performs cover hits across a variety of genres, including songs by Stevie Wonder, Kelly Clarkson, Adele and the Zac Brown Band.

Stevens also tasted Irvine's array of burgers, hot dogs and sides, and called it "a barbecue cookout, gourmet style."

Seating is not provided, so community members are encouraged to bring blankets or low-profile chairs.

Active-duty military members are needed to serve as event volunteers Sept. 10 and 11. Volunteers must be able to lift 40 pounds.

To volunteer, or for more information, contact Stevens at (571) 267-2082 or KJ@usometro.org.
